Oval-leaved milkweed is a compact, cold-hardy milkweed native to northern portions of the Great Plains and central North America. Its softly textured, oval leaves grow in opposite pairs along upright stems, while rounded clusters of creamy white to pale green flowers provide nectar for bees and other pollinators. Like other native Asclepias, its foliage can serve as a host plant for monarch butterfly caterpillars.
Asclepias ovalifolia is especially well suited to northern gardens and naturalized plantings. It prefers full sun to partial sun and well-drained soils and develops distinctive upright milkweed pods as the season progresses. Its relatively modest stature makes it an appealing choice where a smaller native milkweed is desired.
Seeds benefit from cold-moist stratification before spring germination.
