Common milkweed stands tall as the foundational host plant for the monarch butterfly migration East of the Mississippi River. This native plant grows from seed into a 6’ tall specimen over a period of three peaceful years in the garden. Although the roots like to run, you can run them back by pulling up the stems once they are knee high. But be sure to check for monarch butterfly eggs under the leaf!
